Presented by New Morning Star Baptist Church and Sibley Senior Association

Join us to help get the new year off to a great start! Recent research is helping people better understand how to make sustainable and effective changes in their diets. Studies suggest that direct access to healthy food is one way to improve psychological and physical well-being. When people with chronic disease are provided with support that helps them to make healthier choices—even over a short period of time—both health and well-being improve. Nneka Okoye, nurse practitioner at Sibley Memorial Hospital, will help us discover the best ways to incorporate a healthy diet and exercise program into our everyday activities.

Welcome and program introduction: Reverend Dr. Donald K. Sadler, pastor of New Morning Star Baptist Church

Speaker introduction: Marti Brown Bailey, B.S., C.S.A., C.D.P., C.A.D.D.C.T., director of the Sibley Senior Association and Community Health, Sibley Memorial Hospital

Guest speaker: Nneka Okoye is a nurse practitioner at Sibley Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Okoye earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing before going to work in cardiac critical care for 5 years. She returned to school to complete her Master of Nursing and Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner at the University of Virginia. As a family nurse practitioner, Mrs. Okoye performs pre–employment and annual physical examinations to determine the physical capabilities of individuals to perform their essential job functions and she screens individuals for infectious diseases, medical conditions and disabilities.

Mrs. Okoye is particularly interested in functional medicine and is currently enrolled in both the Institute of Functional Medicine and Functional Medicine University. Functional medicine addresses the root causes of disease and treats the body as a whole system. This approach is practiced through in-depth history-taking and mapping symptoms to categorize the root processes that underlie disease. Functional medicine is patient-centered care rather than disease-focused treatment. Mrs. Okoye practices self-care with meditation, breathwork and yoga.
