Note: The History & Biography group has decided to resume meeting every other month in order to give folks time to read longer selections. We will continue with our first Wednesday of the month schedule, but going forward switch back to every other month. Our book selection is David Halberstam's The Coldest Winter: America and the Korean War (2007; 675 pages and notes; available from Amazon paperback, Kindle, and audio). Halberstam considered this his finest work--he decided to write it shortly after finishing The Best and the Brightest, and it took him nearly 10 years to complete. He gives us a masterful narrative of the political decisions and miscalculations on both sides of the conflict. At the same time, he provides us with the individual stories of the soldiers on the front lines who were left to deal with the consequences of those decisions. Andy Jampoler will lead the discussion. Also, plan to submit your suggestoins for books for the rest of 2021 and into 2022. If there is time, we might bring up some ideas for books to be considered--but formal considerations and voting will take place shortly after suggestions are received and collated in early February. Registration is required.ᅠ Contact the CHV office at 202/543-1778 or info@capitolhillvillage.org to register and obtain the necessary Zoom link.
