This month the Village Literary Club will read Natalie Haynes’ novel A Thousand Ships (2019, 366 pp), which is a retelling of the Iliad from the women's point of view. It is one of several recent and popular books (most notably, Circe by Madeline Miller) that give us a different slant on the classic Greek tales. Haynes, who has a classical background, shows us that the Trojan War was as much a woman's war as the men's. One critic describes the novel as a "bold retelling of The Iliad that's panoramic and playful yet makes a serious comment on the war and its cost." The novel comes highly recommended from a Literary Club member.
