This month's book is The Magician (Colm Toibin, 2021, 498 pp). This book is historical fiction, following the life and times the of the writer Thomas Mann. It is not an analysis of Mann’s literary works, but is instead a portrait of Mann, his large family and of the milieu of the many places (Nazi Germany, Switzerland, Los Angeles, Princeton, New Jersey) Mann worked.

Colm Toibin is one of the favorite writers of the Literary Club. The NY Times calls the book "beautiful,” one that “works brilliantly.”
