In August, the Village Literary Club will read Papyrus: The Invention of Books in the Ancient World by Irene Vallejo, translated from the Spanish (2022, 384 pp).The Literary Club member who recommended this book loved it. Her description: “This felicitous writer makes the origins of books (scrolls) and libraries a thrilling read with frequent references to contemporary events (the burning and banning of books and libraries) and her own encounters with books.” The Guardian calls this “a generous work” and notes that it is both “a history of books and a history of reading.” A fitting book for a literary club!
