Introduction to Workshop Series on Solo Aging

Do you, or someone you know, identify as a solo ager? Solo agers are described as anyone over 50, who lives alone, who is not married (including due to divorce or death of a spouse) or partnered in a long-term relationship, has no living children or who otherwise consider themselves to be solely responsible for life decisions as they age. Capitol Hill Village is partnering with Corewood Care to present a workshop series on solo aging and ways to prepare for aging alone. The series is guided by a workbook and videos to supplement learning materials. Workbooks will be provided to each participant.

Each week will center on a different programmatic topic. • Week 1: Introduction to solo aging and what to expect from the solo aging series. • Week 2: Your social networks and other social supports such as villages and care managers. • Week 3: Healthcare decision[1]making and end-of-life choices. • Week 4: Aging in place. • Week 5: What happens if solo aging in place doesn’t work. What are your choices? • Week 6: Summarization of the program.

The program sessions will be held in-person at The Townhomes on Capitol Hill, 750 Sixth St. SE, in the party room. We will meet every other week at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays beginning March 12, followed by 3/26, 4/9, 4/23, 5/7, 5/21. CHV will offer working group sessions in the “off weeks” (3/19, 4/2, 4/16, 4/30, 5/14, 5/28) between each session. We strongly encourage you to attend all 12 weeks.  Note that sessions alternate between programmatic and working group.

If you are interested in learning more about solo aging for yourself or someone you care about, register for this 12-week course through Helpful Village. This program is open to CHV members and residents of the Townhomes. For more information, contact Elizabeth Schacher or Dominic Elliot at 202-543-1778, ext. 109.
