In February, the Village Literary Club will read Horse: A Novel by the Pulitzer Prize-Winning novelist Geraldine Brooks (401 pp. 2022). Horse is yet another good book by Brooks. A historical novel set in the horseracing world of the 19th Century South, in the research rooms of an osteology lab in the Smithsonian in contemporary DC, and in the New York art world of Jackson Pollock, the novel moves deftly between these different worlds (the New York Times calls these leaps “thrilling”). One of the many things readers appreciate about Brooks is the extensive research she does for her novels. Horse is no exception. But Brooks is also known for her compelling plots and deep characters. It’s a tribute to the novel’s appeal that some Literary Club members are reading Horse for the second time.
