Join Dr. Yesim Sayin, Executive Director of the D.C. Policy Center for a presentation on housing issues in the District.

Housing policies are central to the inclusiveness of a city. Housing defines, in large part, how residents share the wealth created by a city and how they access its assets and amenities. Where we live deeply affects our quality of life and the opportunities available to us and our children, especially jobs and schools. How we invest in neighborhoods determines the desirability of the housing stock in those neighborhoods. How we regulate our housing market can shape who stays in the city and who leaves. Public policies that control the housing supply and public investments in amenities and services such as schools, transportation, and infrastructure can play roles as strong as private wealth in defining the demographic make-up of the city.

This second District Dialogues talk on housing in DC will be by Dr Yesim Sayin, Executive Director of DC Policy Center. With over twenty years of public policy experience Dr. Sayin is recognized by policymakers, advocates and the media as a source of reliable, balanced analyses on the District’s economy and demography. Her research interests include economic and fiscal policy, urban economic development, housing, and education.

In a presentation backed by maps and statistics Dr Sayin will discuss:

  1. General structure of housing in DC, historic perspective, and biggest pressure points.
  2. The role of rental housing in creating inclusion and affordability.
  3. Comparisons of neighborhoods in density.

DC Policy Center's work on housing focuses on the relationship between housing policy and opportunity, examining how housing policies shape the District of Columbia, and how they can be improved to create a more vibrant city.
