This month's reading selection for the History and Biography group is Red Famine: Stalin’s War on Ukraine by Anne Applebaum. The book is an examination of the 1932-33 famine during which an estimated 3 to 4.5 million Ukrainians died of starvation due to Stalin’s forced collectivization of the agriculture industry. These Ukrainians perished not because they were accidental victims of a bad policy but because the state deliberately set out to kill them. Applebaum's compulsively readable narrative recalls one of the worst crimes of the twentieth century and shows how it may foreshadow a new threat to the political order in the twenty-first. (2017; 429 pages + notes; available at local bookstores and Amazon).

Registration is required.

The rest of our meetings will take place the first Wed in May and Sept.
